- Remember, if you do not have at least one source of news that you turn to regularly, with which you routinely disagree, then you are not practicing news gathering! You are practicing [confirmation bias].

[S]cience is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking. I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time – when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.
The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30-second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance.
— Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark (New York: Ballantine Books, 1996) at p.32.

My experience with the OS X 10.7 Lion upgrade…
So I decided to upgrade my Macs to Lion. Ever fearful of Murphy’s Law, I decided to use my MacBook Pro as the test subject–even though this is the one Mac upon which I most depend. First things first, I create an up-to-the-minute bootable backup1 and verify that the backup is, in fact, bootable. Second, the […]
Intuit confirms iPad-based personal finance solution
Intuit, makers of the uber-popular Quicken personal finance software, have confirmed, perhaps inadvertently, that they are working on an iPad solution. In a support document titled “Is Quicken for Mac Compatible with Mac OS 10.7 Lion?”, appears the following: What are your plans related to personal finance solutions for Apple customers? We are committed to […]
Man on Moon +42 years
After the astronauts planted a U.S. flag on the lunar surface, they spoke with President Richard Nixon through a telephone-radio transmission which Nixon called “the most historic phone call ever made from the White House.” Nixon originally had a long speech prepared to read during the phone call, but Frank Borman, who was at the […]
OS X Lion App Compatibility
Roaring Apps has a comprehensive listing of app compatibility with OS X Lion, which will prove useful as I get prepared to upgrade; don’t want to lose any critical apps. I know I have to Upgrade Drobo Dashboard to v2.0.3, and make my backup clones of my hard drives, but the big question for me […]
Cars 2 = teh awesome
Saw Cars 2 with my son today. I must say that I haven’t a fucking clue as to why the movie is getting such meager reviews. As with every other Pixar sequel to date, Cars 2 is at least as good as the original.
Nobel Laureate: Science is a totally misunderstood subject
Harold Kroto, 1996 Nobel Laureate (chemistry), speaking to an audience of students yesterday at the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting in Germany: I’m going to talk about what science is because it’s a totally misunderstood sort of subject […] it’s the only philosophical construct we have to determine truth with any degree of reliability. […] The […]
iOS 5 beta 2 is out
Didn’t see it yesterday evening, but Apple has released iOS 5 beta 2 for developers, along with Xcode 4 Developer Preview 2 and iTunes 10.5 beta 2. This comes as a relief to me, because despite the constant warning from Apple that “[t]his beta version of iOS should only be deployed on devices dedicated for […]
