News Gathering vs. Confirmation Bias
- Remember, if you do not have at least one source of news that you turn to regularly, with which you routinely disagree, then you are not practicing news gathering! You are practicing [confirmation bias].

[S]cience is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking. I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time – when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.
The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30-second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance.
— Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark (New York: Ballantine Books, 1996) at p.32.

Tennessee #1 for new COVID-19 cases by population, CDC says
Josh Breslow, writing at WKRN.com: NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Tennessee has the highest number of new COVID-19 cases by population of any state in the U.S., according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC’s coronavirus website shows Tennessee with a high level of transmission of the virus, and a seven-day […]
Tennessee underreported COVID-19 hospitalizations
Brett Kelman writing for The Tennessean: The coronavirus hospitalized about 5,100 more Tennesseans than previously reported over the past 14 months — an increase of more than 20% over prior totals — according to newly backfilled data from the state department of health. Hospitalizations were underreported by anywhere from one patient to dozens on nearly […]
‘I’m sorry, but it’s too late’: Alabama doctor on treating unvaccinated, dying COVID patients
Dennis Pillion at AL.com: Dr. Brytney Cobia said Monday that all but one of her COVID patients in Alabama did not receive the vaccine. The vaccinated patient, she said, just needed a little oxygen and is expected to fully recover. Some of the others are dying. “I’m admitting young healthy people to the hospital with […]
Unvaccinated health workers are “unethical and appalling”
Beth Mole at ARS Technica: On Tuesday, seven health organizations—including the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, the Association for Professionals in Epidemiology and Infection, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society—published a consensus statement, saying that “COVID-19 vaccination should be a condition of employment for all healthcare personnel.” Indeed.
First Dose of Moderna
Today, my wife and I each got the first dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. Thanks Dolly! So far — some nine hours later — no side effects to speak of. The injection site feels about as sore as a seasonal flu shot makes you feel. I can tell you that, again, so far, this […]
Deadliest Days in American History
People, take note that 6 of the deadliest days1 in American history have taken place in the last 8 days. This pandemic is booming, and we all need to do our part: wear a fucking face mask, socially distance, and wash your fucking hands. DEADLIEST SINGLE DAYS IN AMERICAN HISTORY (description — date — fatalaties) […]
Bitching much about face masks?
They’ll likely never admit it, but the people bitching endlessly today about wearing a fucking face mask, and staying home if you don’t need to go out, and keeping your distance, and not gathering in large groups, etc., are the same type of people who would have bitched endlessly about rationing during WWII. And the […]
R.I.P. Dury’s in Nashville, Tennessee
I missed this — really missed this — from 4 months ago, when I was still in a fog from the forced work from home. Dury’s, the landmark Nashville photography store, that opened in 1882 as one of the original eight Kodak dealers appointed by George Eastman himself, has closed: From the Dury’s website (link […]
Facemasks are the Most Important, Powerful Public Health Tool
Dr. Robert Redfield, head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, testifying before Congress on Wednesday: Facemasks — these facemasks — are the most important, powerful public health tool we have. Goddamn right. Now, some people are saying that Dr. Redfield “walked back” his remarks, after being publicly disputed by Comrade Trump, but that’s […]
Oh My Fucking God, Get The Fucking Vaccine Already, You Fucking Fucks
Wendy Molyneux, writing at McSweeney’s: Hi, if you are reading this essay then congratulations, you are still alive. And if you are alive, then you have either gotten the COVID-19 vaccine, or you still have the opportunity to get the vaccine against COVID-19. And holy fuck, if you aren’t fucking vaccinated against COVID-19, then you […]
