News Gathering vs. Confirmation Bias
- Remember, if you do not have at least one source of news that you turn to regularly, with which you routinely disagree, then you are not practicing news gathering! You are practicing [confirmation bias].

[S]cience is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking. I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time – when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.
The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30-second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance.
— Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark (New York: Ballantine Books, 1996) at p.32.

Why we all need subtitles now
“It’s not you — TV dialogue has gotten harder to hear.” Edward Vega at Vox: Have you ever been watching a show or movie, and then a character delivers a line so unintelligible you have to scramble to find the remote and rewind? For me, this moment came during the climax of the Pete Davidson […]
Bad Santa 2
Willie: [to Thurman] Now listen, here’s how it works. She’s gonna pull her rig off and she’s gonna get on all-fours. Then you stand behind her and drop your rig. Now you’re gonna see somethin’ that looks like some kind of Japanese food – it ain’t, so don’t eat it – that’s the bullseye. Then […]
Bad Santa
Willie: What is it with you, anyway? Somebody drop you on your fucking head? Kid: On my head? Willie: Well, yeah. What, are they gonna drop you on somebody else’s head? Kid: How can they drop me onto my own head? Willie: No, not onto your… Would… God damn it! Are you fucking with me? […]
People: Those We Lost in 2022
Tough year. Particularly tough for me was Taylor Hawkins. I’ve been a Foo Fighter fan for years and years. In fact, I couldn’t listen to Foo Fighters music from the time I learned of Taylor Hawkins’ death, until the London tribute concert — 5 and a half months. Gone, but not forgotten.
Life’s this game of inches
I don’t know what to say, really. Three minutes till biggest battle of our professional lives. All comes down to today. And either we heal as a team, or we’re gonna crumble. Inch by inch, play by play, till we’re finished. We’re in hell right now, gentlemen. Believe me. And, we can stay here, get […]
Elvis +45 years
On this day, 45 years ago (that’s 1977, for those who aren’t great at math), Elvis Presley died.
R.I.P. Anne Heche
Anne Heche, perhaps best known for her role as Robin Monroe in Six Days, Seven Nights, but also known for her roles in Donnie Brasco, Wag the Dog, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and Psycho as well as TV roles in Another World, and Hung, to name but a few of her credits, […]
John Lasseter’s Second Act
Rebecca Keegan and Carolyn Giardina reporting at The Hollywood Reporter: No one could tell a story like Lasseter — until he resigned as Disney Animation/Pixar’s chief creative officer in the wake of #MeToo complaints. Now head of Skydance’s animation division, where he oversaw August’s ‘Luck,’ he’s attempting to turn his own story around. As a […]
What is the answer to 99 out of 100 questions?
My father wrote about this in his book. Chapter 1… Page 1… Paragraph 1: What is the answer to 99 out of 100 questions? Money. — Tom Cruise as David Aames, Vanilla Sky (R 2001).
All right, what’s next?
At the end of The Bourne Identity (2002) there’s a very interesting scene Ward Abbott: [Testifying before a congressional intelligence committee] The Treadstone project has actually already been terminated. It was designed primarily as a sort of advanced game program. We’d hoped it might build into a good training platform, but quite honestly, for a […]
