Christopher Hitchens dies at 62

Associated Press:

Eloquent and intemperate, bawdy and urbane, Hitchens was an acknowledged contrarian and contradiction — half-Christian, half-Jewish and fully non-believing; a native of England who settled in America; a former Trotskyite who backed the Iraq war and supported George W. Bush. But his passions remained constant and targets of his youth, from Henry Kissinger to Mother Teresa, remained hated.

Love him or hate him, or both, the world has lost a great thinker and wonderful writer.

Titans still in the hunt

Titans defeat the Bills 23-17, keeping their playoff hopes alive…

Tide’s Richardson should roll in Heisman Trophy voting

Gil Brandt writing at NFL.com:

Richardson has blossomed as a starter this year, running very hard and showing great moves. He evades tacklers, catches the ball well, blocks well and even excelled on special teams early in his career. He has great speed, strength and character. And his team is 35-2 in his three years.

The Tide, of course, is 35-4 in the last three years, but hey–who’s counting?

College Football chaos heats up BCS

What an incredible couple of weekends of college football!

Last week it was Stanford and Boise. This week, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Oklahoma and Clemson! Oh, how the mighty have fallen…

Gene Wojciechowski, writing at ESPN.com:

If the BCS projections are correct, it will be an all-SEC top three: LSU (11-0) at No. 1., Alabama (10-1) at No. 2 and Arkansas (10-1) at No. 3. Oklahoma State (10-1) is expected to be No. 4 — not that it matters right now.

What matters is that Arkansas travels to LSU this Friday. And Alabama travels to Auburn for Saturday’s Iron Bowl, college football’s version of a despise/despise relationship.

Not much is at stake — only LSU’s grip on a BCS championship berth. Beat a lethal Razorbacks team and then win the SEC championship (is that all?) and the Mad Hatter will be in New Orleans for the Jan. 9 Allstate BCS National Championship Game.

For Alabama, a win would all but ensure the Crimson Tide a place in the national championship. Better yet for Bama, it could mean a rematch against the Tigers, who seemingly crushed the Tide’s BCS chances with a Nov. 5 victory in Tuscaloosa.

But that was then and this is now. College football did a 180 on Friday and Saturday nights.

Go ‘Bama… Roll Tide.

A Sister’s Eulogy for Steve Jobs

Mona Simpson, writing in the paper of record:

His philosophy of aesthetics reminds me of a quote that went something like this: “Fashion is what seems beautiful now but looks ugly later; art can be ugly at first but it becomes beautiful later.”

Steve always aspired to make beautiful later.

Incredibly touching and beautiful piece.

The Death of Steve Jobs

What can I say? I think my brother said it best:

We are blown away by the news of Steve’s death. I suppose everyone knew it was coming. But it’s still sad–like losing a friend.

Titans pull out a close one

The Tennessee Titans beat the Denver Broncos at home, 17-14, thanks in part to a late 4th quarter Kyle Orton pass that was tipped by Jason Jones and intercepted by Will Witherspoon.

With Jacksonville falling to Carolina and Houston falling to New Orleans, the Titans at 2-1 find themselves tied for first in the AFC South.

Kevin Smith’s The Bionic Man continues to impress

Yes, fine–I’ll concede that we’re only two issues into this series, but honestly, perhaps the best thing I can say about any comic book is that it entertains me, keeps my attention, has good artwork, and keeps me wanting more. That certainly describes The Bionic Man, at least for me.

Yeah! Titans beat Ravens 26-13

Now that is how we should have played last week! Some of the highlights include:

  • Matt Hasselbeck: 30/42 for 358 yards, among 9 receivers
  • Kenny Britt: 9 receptions for 135 yards
  • Nate Washington: 7 receptions for 99
  • Chris Johnson: 24 carries for 53 yards (ouch)
  • Javon Ringer: 5 carries for 21
