Action Comics #1, or, Superman in bluejeans

So I picked up Action Comics #1 yesterday, and gave it a read last night. It was a little strange at first seeing a young man of steel in jeans and work boots (surely, they weren’t steel-toed…), but I must say ‘I liked it… I liked it a lot’.

Apparently, I’m not the only one who really liked it. Tony ‘G-Man’ Guerrero writing at Comic Vine:

This is a new Superman for all of us. Yes there is some inspiration from the original vibe of the series but it is also completely updated for today’s age. Last week’s Justice League took place five years ago. This issue doesn’t specifically say when it takes place but we know it’s before Justice League due to his costume (or lack of). We still have some of the anti-superhero feeling that was present in Justice League. Superman is a hero but not the hero everyone loved from the beginning. This adds a different and welcomed twist to Superman.

Comic Vine gives the issue 5/5 stars.

Steve Jobs resigns as CEO of Apple

Apple releases a letter from Steve Jobs:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

Kevin Smith’s The Bionic Man #1… is it Wednesday yet?

I’ve been eagerly anticipating the release of this comic for several months now. According to comiXology, it drops tomorrow!

Publisher Dynamite Entertainment describes the first issue thusly:

Kevin Smith is joined by Phil Hester, artist Jonathan Lau, and cover artist/character designer Alex Ross (the team who brought you The MAIN Green Hornet series), Smith unleashes Bionic Man into the 21st century as only he can.

Jim Thome joins 600 HR club

Michael Wilbon said it best on PTI:

We begin with a man hitting his 600th home run–without his name attached to steroids, without a scandalous trainer, without a federal investigation, without perjuring himself before Congress. Jim Thome hit his 599th and 600th home runs […] and becomes only the 8th man ever to hit 600–only the 5th without steroid suspicion. Aaron, Ruth, Mays, Griffey, Thome–that’s it, that’s your list.

Eddie George: CJ is right to holdout

Eddie George, the Titans all-time leading rusher, says Chris Johnson is right to holdout, but he shouldn’t have to:

“I find it hard to believe they didn’t think about his contract during the lockout. I can’t believe they weren’t ready for this,” said George, who attended practice Wednesday. “Granted, they weren’t allowed to talk to Chris’ agent during the lockout, but let’s be realistic here. Once free agency hit, a lot of those deals were done fast. This should have been done first thing.

“It is pretty uncalled for, if you ask me, for them to even be in the situation with Chris. Everyone knew this was coming. This deal should have been done weeks ago.”

Good stuff–just what you’d expect from Penn Jillette.

Jay Mohr’s “Mohr Stories” podcast is awesome

To anyone who knows me, it’ll come as no surprise that I’m a big Kevin Smith (@ThatKevinSmith) fan, and a fan of the SModcast Network. I’ve been regular listener to SModcast since episode 3 dropped back in 2007 and have, over the years, become more-or-less addicted to six other SModcast podcasts, Plus One and Jay and Silent Bob among them.

Now, I catch S.I.R. infrequently–a daily live show just doesn’t tend to jibe with my particular (or perhaps, peculiar) listening habits and I never seem to get around to listening to the daily downloads. So, it was quite fortuitous that the fine folks at SModcast decided to start the “Best of Per Diem” episodes in the Plus One channel. I caught the episode of “Best of Per Diem” that covered the week of July 4th and was blown away by Jay Mohr (@jaymohr37)–the dude is a riot. Turns out Jay’s appearance on Plus One Per Diem was to announce his new podcast on the SModcast Network, Mohr Stories. So, of course, I immediately subscribed.

Well, the whole point of this post is this: Jay Mohr is crushin’ it. This was the 5th week in a row that I started listening to Mohr Stories at work, and wound up having to stop and finish it on my way home, because Jay is so fucking funny that I couldn’t hold back the bursts of laughter. And once my colleagues and co-workers start asking me things like, “are you ok?” and “just what are you listening to?” well, I know that’s my cue to knock it off. Awesome!

Check it out, if you haven’t already.

Titans: A Fan’s Guide to Training Camp

Titans Online:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Training camp is the best time for fans to get an up-close look at the current Tennessee Titans. It is the only time of the year when practice is open to the public. A total of 17 practices are scheduled for fans to watch from July 31 through Aug. 23.

I don’t know about anyone else, but that practice next Saturday afternoon at LP Field has me written all over it…
