News Gathering vs. Confirmation Bias
- Remember, if you do not have at least one source of news that you turn to regularly, with which you routinely disagree, then you are not practicing news gathering! You are practicing [confirmation bias].

[S]cience is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking. I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time – when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.
The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30-second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance.
— Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark (New York: Ballantine Books, 1996) at p.32.

Understanding Donald Trump by Understanding Narcissistic Personality Disorder
I’ve said for over four years now that I often feel guilty making jokes at the president’s expense because it’s not right to make fun of someone with a mental illness just as it’s not right to make fun of someone with a physical illness, and our president suffers from a mental illness recognized by […]
Fitting Bookends for a President Who Often Seems to Live in a Parallel Universe
Jacob Sullum, writing at Reason.com: Donald Trump began his presidency by asserting, based on “alternative facts,” that he had attracted “the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration.” He is ending his presidency by averring that Saturday’s pro-Trump rally in Washington, D.C., attracted more than 1 million people. And just as he claimed that he […]
No Evidence of Voter Fraud
From the paper of record’s “The Morning” briefing: The Times contacted top election officials in every state to ask about illegal voting. Officials in 45 states responded directly. For four of the remaining states, The Times spoke to other statewide officials or found public comments from secretaries of state. None said they had found evidence […]
Libertarians Who Opposed Trump
Elizabeth Nolan Brown writing the Reason Roundup: Libertarians who were less than 100 percent psyched about a Trump win this year have been taking gruff from some right-of-center types, who suggest anyone who didn’t help secure Trump a second term must intrinsically support Biden, or at least has no right to complain about anything Biden […]
I love it when people quote Christopher Hitchens
“What can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.” -Christopher Hitchens https://t.co/k2suaAMOFW — Michael Shermer (@michaelshermer) November 7, 2020 Indeed.
Reason: Trump Says Mail-in Votes Are Suspicious Because They Overwhelmingly Favor Joe Biden. He’s Wrong.
The subhead says it all: This isn’t fraud. This isn’t a scheme to steal the election. It is the very predictable outcome of the president’s own words and actions. No. Fucking. Shit. I mean, seriously, duh! Even as dozens of states were expanding mail-in voting eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic, President Donald Trump spent […]
FoxNews: The saddest, most outrageous moment of the president’s 2020 campaign
Judith Miller, Fox News contributer, and Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter: Never during his four-year term in office did a majority of Americans approve of him. And his Grand Old Party achieved this despite the still soaring COVID-19 pandemic, which Trump has continued claiming would “mysteriously disappear,” but which has cost the nation almost 230,000 lives […]
The Case Against Donald Trump
The Editorial Board of the paper of record: He is a racist demagogue presiding over an increasingly diverse country; an isolationist in an interconnected world; a showman forever boasting about things he has never done, and promising to do things he never will. Precisely.
Penn: I want a president who is kind and inclusive, and thinks before he speaks
Penn Jillette on the Penn’s Sunday School podcast Episode 642 of 29 September 2020 @ 42:11. Somebody […] one of the listeners challenged us […] to say good things about Donald Trump as president. […] I have always wanted to see what it was like to have a president without a filter. We ran that […]
The Final Debate
Or should I say, The Final Debase… The paper of record: But the debate wasn’t normal by the standards of nearly all of American history. It wasn’t normal because one of the nominees — the sitting president — told one lie after another. He did so about the virus, North Korea, China, Russia, climate change, […]
